The Appalachians are a vast range of mountains and hills stretching from New England to Mississippi state in the eastern United States. They are comparatively lower and older than mountains in the western United States.

The Appalachian Mountains as well as Appalachian State University, located in Boone NC, are pronounced "App-ah-LATCH-in." Although commonly mispronounced, the people living in and/or around the Appalachian Mountains use the pronounciation above.

Correction: According to Walt Wolfram of NCSU (and a native of Philadelphia) it's Appa LATCH ian. So, Southerners ARE commonly pronouncing it correctly.
