Newly coined nonce words of English are often spelled with a hyphen, but the hyphen disappears when the words become widely used. For example, people used to write ``non-zero'' and ``soft-ware'' instead of ``nonzero'' and ``software''; the same trend has occurred for hundreds of other words.

To email someone is to send them an email, an electronic message (electronic mail) via the internet. The past tense of email is emailed, e-mailed, or E-mailed. "Enquiries may be emailed to this address…" Note that 'emailed' has only one letter 'l'. However, the word EMAILLED (spelt with two 'els', and meaning enamelled) was used in Britain hundreds of years ago. "Tuelf roses of diamantis, and tuelf ruby battiest sett in gold emailled with quheit, blew an blak. " Inventories, 1579. In the OED emailled is listed with the meaning: "embossed (with a raised pattern), or perhaps arranged in a net or open work". An example of such a usage from 1480 is given by the OED which also suggests the word is probably derived from French emaille (enamelled) and related to Old French emmailleure, a decorative feature based on net work. Pieces of pottery and jewellery were described as emailled when their surfaces were decorated with enamelled designs, a process involving the application of crushed glass powders which hardened into enamel after firing the objects in a furnace. Method: A wire network of "cloisons" (cells or compartments) is formed by attaching thin metal wires to a metal, glass or ceramic surface. Crushed glass powders of different colors and visual properties are placed in the cells in the network. By repeated application of the enamels, firing and polishing, all the cloisons become filled with gem-like colored enamels, forming a very attractive decorative and hard-wearing surface. The Cloisonné technique is the one of oldest methods of enamelling. Possibly the most widely known examples of this technique are those seen on Chinese cloisonné-decorated bowls and utensils. So emailling has been done for thousands of years! For more information see Related links below this box
