Psychological oppression is an act of oppression where one group exerts power over another by breaking the spirit of the suppressed group. Oppressors can use different techniques to oppress, i.e. dehumanization ( the use of derogatory terms to refer to the suppressed group). The prevalence of these terms in society ingrains them into the minds of the oppressed and prevents them from self actualization. They grow and develop in a world that seems to believe they are inferior, and begin to believe it themselves. Even though they will most likely not affirm that the oppressors are correct, psychologically their minds think it is true and direct them to act accordingly. In acting accordingly, they do not reach their full potential and never have the drive for self actualization- the drive to reach ones full potential. In this way, their spirit and drive is broken, and the oppressor can exercise full control.
