The term "super stock" describes a class of racing cars that appear to be similar to a car that a person might buy at a car dealership, but in which both the chassis and the engine, along with many other parts, have been highly modified or specially built for racing. Super stock cars must meet many special requirements relating to the body style, weight, horsepower, and for dozens of other parts.

A "stock car" historically was a car equipped just as it comes from the factory.

Today, the term "stock car" describes racing cars that have a modified chassis and many other specialized parts, but which, as a class, all have engines that are essentially identical, whereas "super stock cars" have engines of varying sizes.

In the United States, several organizations make the rules for stock car racing and have their own races. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is the most popular stock car racing series. The largest and most popular "stock car" race in America today is NASCAR's Daytona 500.

Popular NASCAR drivers include Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt and his son, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and Bobby Allison.

Another popular super stock car driver might be, "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena." According to Jan & Dean's song by the same name, she had a, "brand new, shiny red, super stock Dodge," with a, "four-speed stick and a 426." Go granny, go!
