"Desi" (pronounced THEY-see or sometimes THEY-shee) refers to anyone of South Asian origin (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan or Nepali) living anywhere in the world. "Mallu" (MUL-loo) is a slang word for Malayali (person with roots in Malayalam-speaking Kerala state of southwest India). So mallus are a tiny subset of desis. Not only can Malayalis be found around the globe (esp. in Mideast Gulf countries), but many mallus are born and brought up in metros throughout India like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore.
