What is the method of organization for a definition essay?

The typical organization of a formal essay is in five paragraphs: one introduction, three body paragraphs, and one conclusion.

The first paragraph is the Introduction Paragraph where the ideas of the essay are set out along with a "thesis statement". The thesis statement is the most important part of the essay since it explains what the essay is going to prove. For example, if I were going to write an essay about Star Wars, I could write as my thesis statement: "George Lucas makes Star Wars Movies based on what he would like to see in the theatre and does not actually care about the fans." Notice that this is something that is not an obvious fact, but something I would need to prove. Conversely, if I said "Jar Jar Binks is a character in Star Wars Episode I" that would be an obvious fact and would not work well as a thesis statement.

The next three paragraphs (paragraphs 2-4), called the body paragraphs, will be providing evidence to support the thesis statement and to counter any evidence that may seem to indicate that my thesis is wrong. In my example, I would look for statements that support my assertions from George Lucas' material (primary sources) or from educated discussions about him (secondary sources). For example, if George Lucas says, "I do not care what fans think about my movies." I would quote him and explain how this demonstrates that he really does not value what the fans think. If I found someone writing about George Lucas who said, "In his earlier period, he sought a lot of feedback on his work seeking to improve it." this would counter my thesis. So I would try to find other information that shows perhaps that in his later period, he did not care about feedback. That would strengthen my argument because I have considered evidence against my point, but showed that it was not sufficient.

The final paragraph is the Conclusion where the thesis statement is restated and the evidence provided in the body is demonstrated to create a coherent defense of the thesis. In my Star Wars example, I would write something along the lines of, "Given what George Lucas has indicated in several of his interviews and the consistent way he has made films that anger audiences without taking their criticisms on board, George Lucas makes Star Wars movies based on what he wants to see and does not care about the fans." I would then list some of the evidence I used in my body paragraphs.
