According to a column called "The Word Detective," the term started as "pick pack," "pick back," and "Pick a Pack." As time went on into the 18th century, the term mutated into the popular form "pickaback." However no one knew what the "picka" portion meant, so they started using "piggyback" instead so it sorta kinda made sense.
