I'm honestly not too sure, but I believe it originated in Russia. It means "friend." I hope I helped!

Answer 2

While it does mean 'friend' it is not Russian in origin. It comes from the French "camarade" which in turn has roots in the Spanish "camarada"

"Communism comes from the French word "commune", which meant the same as the English "community". Marx and Engels germanified it into Kommunismus to refer to their ideal of the community holding productive capital in common, and it was then turned into "communism" in the process of translation into English.
