The main theme is of relationship in The Sons Veto. This theme consists of her relationship with Sam, Vicar and Randolph. Now, her relationship with Sam is that they were briefly romantically involved before Sophy was married to Vicar. They were to be married but they had a fight and therefore did not proceed with the wedding. She then got the opportunity to marry Vicar and she accepted not because she was in love with but instead because of his class and mannerism, she respected him. However, after they had been married her relationship with Vicar was somewhat a job for her as she was filling the position of his first wife. Then her relationship with her son was extremely tough as "class" played a major role in his life and as he was aware that his mother was previously from a lower class, he looked down on her and believed that he knew more than her and was more educated with proper manners. This led to Sophy being alone as she no longer had her husband and her son had power over her making her feel alone and her life having no meaning however, she soon came across Sam and her life meant something to her again.
