I've read that it's because kittens copy their mothers. Maybe that's true, but we adopted our cat and as he settled in, he used to sit in the living room and watch people, then copy their actions to fit in. My fondest memory is of him loungingin the corner of the sofa on his tail, with one paw on the arm, and one on the cushion next to him, staring intently at whoever was speaking at the time. Definitely a copy cat.......but maybe that's just coincidence.
