For a standard dictionary-type spell checker, any word that is misspelled but is still a word in the dictionary will be considered acceptable and not marked. For example, can't (contraction of can not) and cant (many meanings in categories from architecture to language to railroads).

Also, words that are misused are not found. A common one is using the wrong option among there, they're, and their.

A combination spelling and grammar checker can often find these misspellings, but it is still not able to catch all errors of these types.

Spell-checkers also tend to mark unknown words, even when they are spelled correctly. Technical terms are an example of a vocabulary that is rarely included in most spell-checkers. Many allow unknown words to be added to a custom

What types of spelling errors are not caught by an electronic spell checker?

Electronic spell checkers are not always able to catch certain types of spelling errors, such as homophones (words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings) like "their" and "there," or "to," "too," and "two." They may also miss errors related to incorrect word usage or context, such as "its" and "it's" or "your" and "you're." Additionally, spell checkers may not catch misspellings of uncommon or proper nouns or specific technical terms.
