Geronimo was a person, a native American who lived in Colorado about 100 years ago. He often visited the Turkey Creek area of Jefferson County and sometimes put on Indian shows for the tourists. An educated and refined man, for the entertainment of the public he would sometimes pretend to speak no English and have his grandchildren translate for him. They would relate acts of incredible bravery and luck, most likely with little basis in fact. Somehow his name then became associated with dangerous things (like parachuting into enemy territory). Perhaps the 10th Mountain Division (stationed in Colorado) or the 45th Infantry Division (largely made up of Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahomans) popularized Geronimo's name when going into battle in World War II.
