In order for Ian (a 15-year-old boy) to complete his Civics course, he has to volunteer for 40 hours. He chose to work at a place called "The Club" without even reading what it was because he thought it the name sounded like a cool name. After he found out that the job was to work at a soup kitchen and feed the homeless he couldn't change it. He knew that he had to go or else his dad wouldn't get him a car for his birthday. The soup kitchen is in a very poor part of town.
When he went there for the first time he was late for the interview so he cut through a park. He realised he was getting cornered by three men and he didn't know what to do. When a homeless man named Jaques came to save him. For extra marks he interviewed Jaques and found out that he was a Peace Keeper in the Canadian army and went to Rwanda, Africa. Ian learns some sad things about him. Life takes on a whole new meaning for Ian and he begins to give back some of what he was given…
