None is short for 'not one (person/thing)' or 'no one' or 'not any.'

Because 'none' has a 'singular' basic meaning, it is easy to think that it should always be followed by a singular verb, e.g. "None of us is perfect."

However, in the English language, for over a thousand years, none has been used with both singular and plural verb forms!

In fact, when the meaning is "not any persons or things" (see example above), the plural form is much more usual, i.e.

  • "None of us are perfect."
But, if the word 'none' is used with specific reference to a singular entity, and clearly means 'not one / not any,' it is followed by a singular verb: e.g.
  • "Of all the books in the world, none is more well known than ... ."

Which is correct none of you are or none of you is?

The correct form of this sentence would be "none of you are". This is because "you" in this context is plural in the case of "you all" so "are" would be the appropriate verb here.
