With the self-imposed hectic schedules many parents keep, they don't read enough to their children. Those children then enter the educational systems without the fundamental building blocks necessary to develop reading skills. This is combined with the fact that so much of our information today is transmitted via phone, TV, radio and computer. So most students don't take the time (or are guided by a teacher to take the time) to practice writing skills, which are best honed by constant reading and by practice in composition.
