Why was slang invented?

Slang is jargon used by one specific group of people. It comes about as that group talks to each other - they naturally use words that mean something to them, and over time, those words can change and become slang instead of common words.

For example, people in any job have their own slang to describe their tools, the job, and the work they need to do. Hang out on any job site and you will hear slang. People in different areas use different slang - in the UK a fag is a cigarette, but in the USA, a fag is a homosexual man.

People use slang to be less formal. Slang relaxes the mouth and allows for a more comfortable speaking process...it is alot more difficult to speak perfect proper English. Slang also allows for more of an identity when speaking. You can personalize slang and talk how you want to talk as opposed to following standard English protocal.

Forexample: Say the words "Got to."

Now say the slang word "Gotta."

Much easier to say "Gotta."

internet slang was started in the late '90s and early 2000s, when the 'Technology Boom" began and more and more people began using electronics. Many decided that typing with perfect grammar was just too much, since using the Internet was for enjoyment, and began using smaller terms. When something was funny, instead of typing "That was funny" or "laugh out loud," people would type LOL. Users began shortening more and more words, and the Internet slang culture grew. It is useless to read slang guides, because the type of slang and what it means varies from who your saying it to or who is saying it OR what area the people live in, sort of like how people from Northern places say "pop," and people from Southern states tend to just say "Coke," whether referring to Pepsi or Coca-Cola.most slang comes from commonly used ways of sayings or shortened words."Mind your own beeswax" comes from tha fact that women used to make candles from bees wax. if someone critisized the way they were making them, they would say "mind your own beeswax".sci-fi is the short way of saying Science Fiction.

Slang has been around as long as language has - people invent slang for several reasons.

• To create a verbal shortcut for passing information around, such as workplace jargon
• To create an exclusive group and keep others from knowing what they're talking about
• Just because it sounds cool or hip

"Slang" has been around since the beginning of time. It was developed as a secret coding system in the ancient times to confuse opponents. Slang has it's place during history as it was used during wars, battles and overthrowing of government power.

From slang, the Morse coding system was developed as well as abbreviations for the writings of certain words. To save time slang often lets us make a statement about something in less words. Ya digg? (coding: Do you understand now?).

If you think about it, there could be many reasons, I compiled a list of why

1. People maybe wanted to communicate without police or citizens recognizing what they were saying, and soon people might have caught on, so they started using it

2. People probably thought there weren't words that exactly fit what they were doing so they might have started making up words that sounded better

3. To make things rhyme in rap songs

4.People were probably planning crimes and they realized people would be listening so they made different words that had the same meaning as English words

5. To confuse white people

well the term sick as slang originated in Trinidad & Tobago in the late 70's early 80's. Slang over time in all different countries came about with the improper pronunciation of words.
