I asked the same question to a world class jumper and he did not know.

On my own research investigation I came across "ox fence" which is a strong fence

consisting of a ditch, hedge and rail on one side. I would surmise that the double rail fence (show jumping -oxer) is called an oxer because of its similarity to a strong fence to keep in oxes .

I am continuing my investigation and will report any new findings.

Hogsback this type of oxer is mainly used over cross country courses. It has three rails, with the tallest in the middle. What are some of the obsacles in horse jumping?

In show jumping, there are three basic types of fences, the vertical, the crossrail, and the oxer. The vertical is just what it sounds like, a set of usually two poles stacked vertically between two posts that hold them up, or standards. The crossrail, not seen in jumping competetion and reserved for schooling, is made from two poles set diagonally in their jump cups so that they cross and make an X shape. Crossrails are used to help train a horse to leap in the center of a jump, as the lowest place in a crossrail is in the middle. An oxer is essentially a combination of two ascending verticals placed a few feet apart so that the horse must jump both in one leap. Oxers are the most advanced type of jump as they require a horse to gain more horizontal distance rather than vertical leap. Other than basic jumps, horses are also often required to jump walls, hedges, or pools of water. In cross country, horses may have to jump up or down banks, across ditches, or into or over water. In steeplechasing, essentially a horse race with jumps stuck out on the track, a feild of horses race over a series of hedges.

What are some names of show jumping jumps?

wwhitney said:I'm assuming that you're talking about show jumping as in jumping horses. The different types of jumps are: verticals (single), oxers (two verticals together, wide), water jump (very wide open water) and triple bar (3 ascending verticals close together). A vertical or oxer can be built with poles, panels... And verticals and oxers can be combined to create double or triple combinations. Generally the jumps in combinations are one or two strides apart. ELIStudent says: there is also the puissance, that is a competition on its own, some people include it as a showjumping jump others don't. Incase you don't know about it heres what it is: Its a big red wall that is made higher every round. You are out if you knock it down or one of the 'warming up jumps'. The warming up jumps are there for the first 3 round and for the first 2 round there are 2 then on the 3rd only 1 and after that there is none. The time does not matter and sometimes there is a limit to the rounds sometimes there isnt. It has been known that sometimes it can take 12 rounds to find a winner! Hope this helps

How do you know if a horse is purebred?

There is no absolutely sure way, unless you have registration papers or your horse is an outstanding example of its breed. Arabians are generally recognizable because they have a dished head, very small, fine muzzle, and will arch their necks in a very characteristic manner. Appaloosas are usually spotted, but solid ones are well known. Quarter Horses are big, muscled horses most of the time. Draft horses, such as Clydesdales and Percherons, have large feet and are very tall. Gaited horses move in a way other than a normal walk/trot/canter. The best way to determine a breed is to narrow the horse down to what breeds it could be, and then investigate the breed characteristics.
