ONLY GET VW COOLANT or be dumb and put cheap stuff in and pay for it later. NEVER put green coolant in. Will destroy all coolant parts. It will rot them. Happened to me. I had to replace it all.
as with most cars you should almost always follow vehicle manufactures recommendations. I'm lucky, I have a 20 years plus VW dealer tech in the family and he warned me of this when I bought my 1998 2.0 GTI. The same is true when adding Power Steering fluid. In high school auto shop I was taught that regular ATF fluid was acceptable to use in place of power steering fluid. not the case any longer.
More info needed. Owned a '91 Golf GTi (8v PB engine) myself since '99 and know loads about it. Please contact me (via the message board) with more info and I'll try to help.
cougar 99 where is coolant temperature sensor
In a 1999 VW Golf GTI, the sunroof relay is typically located in the fuse box. For this model, the fuse box is found under the dashboard on the driver's side. You may need to consult the owner's manual for the exact relay position, as the layout can vary. If you're having trouble, checking for a diagram on the lid of the fuse box can also be helpful.
through the coolant tank!
coolant
it could simply be worn out valve seals or a blown head gasket. check the seals first before wasting money changing the head gasket.

why does the coolant only leak when engine is off on my 1999 grand am?
99 + 99 = 198
I assume its probably in the same location as my moms 99 beatle and my 01 GTI. When you open the drivers side door, on the side of the dash that meets the door there is a panel, open that. Bingo you have your fusebox =D.
