The mass air flow sensor operates in conjunction with other sensors to adjust the fuel mixture and the data transfered to the gearbox. I have faced this problem with my 1998 c-class and after thorough inspection to the catalyzer, gearbox oil level, and other sensors, I replaced the mass air flow sensor and the car's performance and the shifting timing has improved impressively.
