well i have a 1991 BMW 318i (e30) all i had to do was take the face off the clock (use a flat head it will pop off) then when the face is off there is to little clips like on the back of the remote for the batters and pull it out but have fun trying to find one that works they all seem to have this problem but hope this helps you

Has the car got the on board computer with the screen and the clock on the right of the screen? If so I'm pretty sure you hold down the clock button and use the 1000, 100, 10, 1 buttons to set it. Ignition might need to be on.
