I would like to second that there is no such thing as lifetime fluid. This phenomena has been created and furthered by auto companies offering included maintenance for 3 or 4 years, as Volkswagen began a model year or two ago. They do this to reduce their own costs now that they're covering the maint. VW automatic trannies don't have a dipstick (no manual trannies ever did). Check as above ON LEVEL surface. If it runs out or you can touch it right at fill hole level, you're good. Ensure you have the right oil, manual and auto transaxles may take different fluid. If you're not going to keep the car past the original warranty, you're probably fine not changing it, BUT if you resell the car and keep records, showing a fluid change every 30,000 miles will help resale. If you want to keep the car for 100,000 miles or more, doing these changes may well save you an auto tranny rebuild; will ensure smoother shifting in a manual. ADS
