The 89 and 93 Eldorados have a U-shaped pin that goes into the leather from the front of the car. It is very hard to see, and even harder to get to come out. It works like a Key Pin and once removed, alows the whole top of the shifter to come off. It is pretty small and flat, just like a spring. I took mine off to get access to removal of the center console.

How do you replace the shift shaft on 1973 50hp mercury?

To replace the shift shaft on a 1973 50hp Mercury outboard, first, ensure the engine is securely tilted and disconnect the battery. Remove the lower unit by taking out the bolts and carefully separating it from the powerhead. Once the lower unit is off, you can access the shift shaft; remove the retaining pin or screw, then pull the old shift shaft out and replace it with the new one. Reassemble the lower unit, ensuring all connections are secure, and test the shift mechanism before reattaching the battery.
