Easy. The cap on top of the knob - with the gear arrangements on it (1,2,3,4,5,R) will pop off if you pry under it. There should be a machine screw holding the knob onto the shaft of the shifter - unscrew it, and since the knob is splined, pull the knob straight up and off. It might take a little forcing. That's all there is to it!
-if you are also trying to remove the entire shifter (shaft) there is one screw at the bottom of the shaft right next to the transmission that must come out, then the shaft slides right up and off. i had to do this when dropping the tranny, in order to replace my clutch.
you dont have to but it makes it a lot easier.
support rear of engine. remove drive shaft. remove transmission. remove cluth. remove fly wheel. reinstall is exact opposite of removal
Remove the transmission oil pan
To check the fluid in a manual transmission of a 1991 Ford Ranger, first ensure the vehicle is on a level surface. Locate the fill plug on the side of the transmission; it typically requires a wrench to remove. Insert a finger into the hole; the fluid level should be just below the fill hole. If necessary, add the appropriate transmission fluid until it reaches the correct level.
You unscrew the bolts.......
