The older style split-window buses used a reduction gear to give the vehicle better torque. The drawback was that this also limited the top speed to somewhere around 55 mph. Most of these older buses have since been converted to eliminate the reduction gears and can easily go 65 to 70 mph.

The later bay-window buses had larger engines and therefore didn't need the reduction gear. These buses can easily manage 70 to 75 mph as long as you're not going uphill.

All vw buses are underpowered to a degree. They are not by any means high-performance vehicles and should not be driven like one. However, some people have retro-fitted 6-cylinder Subaru and even American V8's into them and they have been known to pop wheelies.
