First you have to remove 3 screws to remove the front/top cover of the radiator.
Then you have to remove four bolts (10mm) to release the radiator. Then you can lift the radiator up and tilt the top of it "out of the car". This will give you a bit more room to work.
I know people who remove the radiator completely to get better access. No matter what you do the glow plugs are hard to remove. First you need to remove the 8mm screws (one for each glow plug) that is connected to the power. Then you have to use a 12mm tool to get the glow plug out. You can use a long socket (12mm) to get one or two out. The rest needs another tool.
This tool can be bought cheap at certain hardware stores. They do the job. No need to pay a lot of money on a tool you will use every 5 -7 years..
Without this tool, it will take many hours. With the right tool you can do it in 45 min. If you have done it a few times it will take you 30-35 min. I used 1,5 hours the first time.
When you have replaced the glow plugs with new ones put the car together again.
You will most likely need a magnet too, so you don't loose nuts and bolts down under the engine. And it can be handy to use when you put the 8mm nuts on again. You can not fit your hand down anywhere on this car.
I have seen a speed mechanic on a video that changes the plugs in just a few minutes. But he removes the diesel pump and everything connected to the pump AND the radiator. But he has clearly done this MANY times. There is no need to remove these parts IF you have the right tools.
The VW Caravelle T4 is NOT the easiest car to change glow plugs on. I find it strange that the design of this car/engine have placed them so little service friendly.
