VW America has an on-going issue with the 1.8T engine in the Passat and Jetta going back over a decade (also in Audi's). The problem involves the oil pump, insufficient cooling of the turbo, and the result; oil sludge accumulation. They have to know about this problem and so they issued a warranty extension as a result. However, VW America will not cover the warranty unless the owner can provide receipts showing an oil change every 5K miles, something they know very few people will be able to produce. Never at the time of purchase was the requirement mentioned to us - in fact the dealer who did most of our maintenance never even recorded the info in the maintenance log as they are supposed to - and the Owners Manual, et al, only refers to "recommended maintenance intervals". As well, they have refused to help some people because they have not been using synthetic oil, yet as recently as three mointh's ago a local dealer used regular oil. The position of VWA is that the oil related engine problems would not exist if owners changed their oil every 5k miles. If that was the case, why bother with the extended warranty, because the only people it will cover are the one's who would not have the problem in the first place! Makes no sense.
