6 - 6 cylinder
They just didnt rename it when they put it into production. The similar XJ12 has a, you guessed it, 12 cylinder engine.
The code name for the 86-94 model was XJ40, followed by X300, X308, X350, etc.
All of these were known as XJ`s though the 6 was dropped with the X300 as it had an 8 cylinder engine.

Yes XJS wheels will fit XJ6; I know for a 1987 Jaguar but not sure about any other years I have run XJS wheels on my 1987 XJ6

The Jaguar XJ6 was first produced 1973. They were also known as the Jaguar XJ Series II which included the Jaguar XJ12, the main difference being the engine. Jaguar continued to produce these vehicles until 1979. In Cape Town, South Africa, the XJ6 was produced until 1981.
