Tells the brain how fast the crankshaft is turning and uses a refference to let it know when the TDC mark is passed. The inductive sensor on the #6 spark plug ( or the cam shaft sensor if your car is equipped ) tells the brain where the cam is so the brain can determine the exact part of the firing order the car is in at any given moment. There is no distributor on you car; the rotor is mounted directly to the cam shaft. The brain adjusts timing by telling the coil when to fire and the injectors when to open and for how long.

The crankshaft position sensor is located at the driver's side bell housing. There are two sensors exactly alike being held with an Allen bolt. The one sensor closest to the front of the car is the speed sensor and the one closest to the rear of the car is the crankshaft position sensor. Hope that helps...

In a BMW 528i, the crankshaft position sensor is typically located near the bottom of the engine, often on the engine block or transmission bell housing. It is positioned to detect the position of the crankshaft, and accessing it may require removing some components, such as the air intake or engine covers, depending on the specific model year. Always refer to the vehicle's service manual for precise location and replacement instructions.
