A check engine light on any automobile means that there is something not right with the vehicle. It could mean any number of things, frequently related to an emissions component, but not necessarily. It is referred to in the inspection community as a MIL or Mal-function Indicator Lamp (not "light" as most people think.)
You can go to a place of business that offers car inspections and ask if they can hook it up to a portable OBD device which will tell them what trouble codes are present in the emissions system. Some auto parts stores offer the same service to their customers. At least this will give you a good beginning before going to a mechanic for an answer.
Oh, FYI, lots of people have a simple embarassing fix, though I doubt this is your case. If the gas cap is off even a little, screwed on part way, crooked, cracked or missing, it will cause the light to come on.
