You will need to buy the special tool (dipstick) for using to measure the level only and then remove it and keep it in a safe place. You can purchase one on the internet or the dealer should be able to get one for you.

On my 1998 E320, the factory manufactured the transmission without a dipstick. It was assumed it wouldn't need one. I bought one from the dealer and then serviced my transmission with dealer fluid, filter, seals, etc.
