If they are the same as BMW they wear with the pads and must be replaced to reset the light

Regardless of any engineering answer, they are a wear part of the braking system and connected to the electronic controls you rely on like ABS......they cost $2. You decide.

I just changed my pads and rotors and you should always change the sensor as they wear with the pads. The sensor for my c240 cost me $17.00 at Mercedes. You can also get them on eBay if this is a little expensive.
