Keep the button for the overdrive engaged at all times and the vehicle will decide when it is needed. But if you prefer to determine when to use it yourself then its best to use it when your cruising the interstate. Its basically just a 4th gear that's designed to give you better gas mileage. If your "arrow" light is lit on the dash that means that your overdrive is off. If the light is off...your overdrive is on.

A common problem with alot of Volvo's is the Overdrive. Basically the high gear. If it wont shift into high gear it means that the "Overdrive" is activated and won't shift into high gear. You need to see if there is a little upwards pointing arrow on your Dashboard Cluster. If there is then you need to replace your Overdrive Solenoid.

In a 1993 Volvo 240, the overdrive relay is typically located in the engine compartment, near the driver's side fender. It is mounted on the relay board, which is situated close to the battery. You may need to remove the cover of the relay board to access the relay itself. Always consult the vehicle's service manual for specific details and diagrams.
