The Volkswagen, or "people's car" was an idea of Nazi Germany. Emile Porsche was commissioned to design a simple, reliable, easy to repair vehicle that could be mass produced and distributed to every family in Germany.
The war didn't allow that to happen and production didn't actually start until 1948, but from 1949 through to the seventies they were everywhere.
