It is on front of the engine on the driver's side. First, drop the plastic cowling that is attached by two screws. It will swing forward out of the way revealing the oil filter. If not for the cowling, the filter would be obvious to anyone.

5.9 Quarts with a new filter. Often it takes slightly more. Check the oil level on the dip stick after it's sat for at least 5 mins. on level ground. It takes a while for the oil to drain back into the sump. Don't over fill. This engine doesn't like that.
Requires a special wrench tool. Look on eBay for "Volvo Oil Filter Wrench" They are about $10.

The oil filter is located underneath the engine, passenger side. You will see it in a black plastic housing. The Volvo S40 doesn't use a traditional metal style oil filter. You can order the filter from your Volvo dealer or K&N makes one as well, model # HP-7002. You will need a special wrench to remove the filter, you can order this from your Volvo dealer or from Amazon.com (search for Volvo S40 filter wrench), made by AST/Assenmacher, cost is roughly $14.00.
