every engine has a fly wheel, which the starter turns. the start looks like two cans together, one is way biger than a soda can, and other is about the same as a soda can lol. if your car is RWD (rear wheel drive) then the starter will defiantly be on the back the engine, if its front wheel drive then it will be on the side, which are a lot harder to remove

The starting motor for a 1996 Neon is on the side of the engine block. The starter is at the rear at the transmission.
