There is no driver-door trunk-release.
The Key has a center-button trunk-release. There should be a Click as the latch releases. Then press the top of the on-trunk VW-decal.
If this (standard) procedure does not work, you can release the trunk-lid Manually, as explained in
the owner's manual, and summarized here.
From inside the car, release and pull-forward either or both rear seat-backs, to gain access to the
trunk. Remove any obstackes and stick your head in there. You'll see a horizontal Slot, about
2.5 inches wide and about 0.25 inches high. Stick the Key (or a screwdriver) into the Right side
of the slot, then pull it Left to release the latch. At the same time, push up slightly on the trunk lid.
The lid will tend to fall closed again, so push it up far enough to let the air-pistons hold it, or slide
something into the gap to hold the lid while you crawl out.

I have the no-open-by-key problem occassionally, and have opened manually and lubricated the
exposed portions of the latch. I have not yet found any reference to (or solution for) the problem
on-line. I guess I'll have to pull off the inner trunk panel and check further. Maybe a mechanical
problem. Maybe a sensor problem. In either case, intermittent; and in any case irrelevant to Your question.
VW Beetle has trunk mats, liner, and carpet just like original Beetle did. Though the trunks now are similar to a hatchback.
