when you open the engine cover look at the right side as you stand . no 1 cylinder is the inner one in the side where the starter located.
Right side front. If you know where your starter is, the number 1 cylinder is right next to it.
Passenger side, behind the manifold.
When the point are in no 1 position and just closing no 1 piston is up.
Front cylinder on the drivers side.
When facing the engine compartment from the rear of the vehicle the number one cylinder is located on the right and furthest forward. The number 4 cylinder is located to the left and furthest rearward.
It is a 1600 cc from a 1970 through 1972 Type 1 Beetle.

On a 1972 Datsun 240Z, the number 1 cylinder is located at the front of the engine, closest to the radiator. The engine in the 240Z is an inline-six configuration, so the cylinders are numbered 1 through 6 from front to back. Thus, cylinder 1 is at the far left when facing the engine from the front of the car.
Many Ford V-8's number 1 cylinder would be located on the passenger side bank most forward cylinder. It would be helpful to know which engine you have to be sure.
Looking towards the rear window, it is the RIGHT front cylinder. (passenger side, front cylinder, USA)
