Part of the number is internationally recognised.

Generally (universally?) the first 3 digits denote the make (manufacturer) of the vehicle.

SAJ=Jaguar.

W0L=Vauxhall/Opel

WVW=Volkswagen.

ETC

Then the rest is up to the manufacturer, with he understanding that the last 6 are "frame numbers" for the make/model, and are as such "unique".

SO you might get W0L000058R123456.

W0L=Vauxhall/opel.

58R=Cavalier 5 door hatch.

123456=unique number for the 5 door hatch cavalier in question.

You might get W0L000073R123456, but then 73R is a Corsa van, so the 123456 is still unique, there will be only one 73R followed by 123456.

Hope this makes sense.
