usually the rough idling/running that clears when it comes on boost is caused by one of two things, firstly the AFM (Air Flow Metre) could be damaged...it sits directly behind the Airfilter/Airbox and connects to the Turbo inlet pipe. or The Lambda sensor is faulty
A faulty turbo is indicated by pure black smoke when engine revs are above idling revs and it can also be shown by poor machine performance.

To properly cool down a 1981 Turbo Charger Trans Am, allow the engine to idle for about 5-10 minutes after driving, especially if it has been under heavy load or high RPMs. This idling period helps to reduce turbocharger temperatures by allowing the oil to circulate and cool the turbo. Avoid turning off the engine immediately after driving, as this can lead to oil coking in the turbo bearing due to residual heat. Regularly checking and maintaining oil levels and quality is also essential for optimal turbo performance.
it cools the air compressed by the turbo from the turbo to the intake for better performance and maximum horsepower
