I have same problem and in my web search for solution I have narrowed it down to 2 likely problems.
a) the wires in the rubber snorkle on the drivers side of the trunk - near the hinge have chafed and shorted or even broken. I opened mine and 2 bigger wires have exposed copper and look pretty bad.
b) the actual electrical opening mechanism (in mk5 part of the lock) is broken. You can test this by giving it alternative source of electricity if it works this way problem is electrical. Or you can try measuring the juice coming to teh connector - if there is juice the problem is the lock, if no juice its elsewhere.
It of course can be else where too but these 2 seem the most common issues.
