I can only tell you that the same thing happened on my 83 300D. The ingnition was just worn out. The ignition is encased in hardened steel and it cost over $700 to replace
Is it as simple as the wheels are cramped and binding the steering wheel?
Turning my ignition on and wont turn off because it is faulty.

Your key could be worn. Try moving your steering wheel while turning the ignition. If the locked steering is in a bind the key will not turn over.
