On average, people walk around 1300-1500 miles per year. However, the amount of walking an individual does depends largely on his or her's overall physical health, where they live, and their access to motorized transportation. Someone who is overweight or has breathing problems would walk less than someone who is deemed healthy. People living in urban areas take more steps per day than those residing in the suburbs or country. Those who lack a car (or do not have access to reliable transportation) would walk more than those who do.

*I have a fit-bit step tracker, it has been exactly 4 months of walking from 1.5 to 5 miles a day and as of today I just logged in 250 miles. That would put me at only about 1,100 miles a year ...and I work out and do yoga.

I think the 1,500 a year for average is too high. I will be walking that soon, as I keep going a bit farther every day, but 1500 is "above average"! That is saying that if you are "average" you are walking 4 miles a day.

An average person does not go beyond 2.5 miles a day. That puts the person at 912.5 miles a year.
