I shattered my leg into 23 separate pieces in a skating accident which resulted in a torsion fracture & break at the bootline.

The initial break did not hurt much until they tried to move me. The ice chilled my leg and reduced the immediate swelling and pain. The most painful experience was having my foot and lower leg rotated so that it faced forward (It was facing backwards after the accident). Even though I had been given Morphine and Entinox pain relief I screamed. I don't recommend this procedure to anyone.

To repair it my knee was split open at the kneecap and a drill used to insert a foot long steel pin called an intermedullianary nail inside the bone. Fortunately this was done under general anaesthetic. The pin was fixed at the ankle and knee with four steel screws.

I could not walk at all for a month. After two years I could not walk further than a mile without being in pain the next day, and even 4 years after the accident I have daily pain at the break point just above the boot line.
