The motivations to exercise are the same as the motivations to improve any aspect of life. Often, negative motivations are more powerful than positive motivations. Someone, for example, may be told by a physician to exercise in order to avoid certain negative health consequences. Someone else may want to exercise in order to develop a body that will be more appealing to the opposite sex. All the motivations will have something in common, namely, a desire either to avoid a negative outcome or to gain a positive outcome.
