Not all boxers do, but those that train early in the mornings do it for some of the following reasons:

  1. Getting up really early usually means you end up going to bed early later that night. This can be a great benefit in keeping you from the unhealthy distractions of the night such as going out drinking with friends. Most boxers cut out all drinking during pre fight training, which usually consists of 6 to 12 weeks of intense diet and exercise. Rising early helps discipline them in this regard.
  2. When you jog early in the morning there is less traffic and so it is safer if you live in a city than when there are lots of vehicles on the road.
  3. There is less pollution early on in the day.
  4. Getting up early to run sets your mind up for the whole day as it is the first thing you do and therefore a priority. Your actions frame your mindset and eventually create set thinking patterns.
  5. Some boxers feel early morning jogging gives them a psychological edge over their opponents. Mike Tyson said this is why he ran at 4am as he knew his opponents might not be doing so.
  6. Exercising first thing on an empty stomach can help with weight loss. Boxers who have to cut down their weight use this to shed pounds fast. Chris Eubanks, when asked in an interview what he had for breakfast replied, A glass of water and a 6 mile run!
