clue originally meant for something to be rolled, like a ball of yarn. In Greek Mythology, Jason was given a ball of yarn from Medea to help him escape the minotaurs labyrinth. She was given a hint about this from Daedalus. So it probably became a common phase "to give someone a clue" instead of give to them a hint (kinda like the phrase "all the way to timbucktoo" means a long way to go when timbucktoo is actually a shipping town in Africa) and eventually the word clue was added to the dictionary as a helpful hint
