Good question! Probably the most important thing to realize is that narcissists are so self centred that they are incapable of true, deep, feelings for others. Their definition of 'friend' is likely to be very different from yours. They come first, all the time. You should not take this personally. They can't help it.
It's probably best not to expect too much from a narcissist because you will inevitably be disappointed. You will probably need to keep reminding them that you are just as important as they are and that you have the same rights that they do. You will need to stand up for yourself when they talk over the top of you, interrupt, or otherwise treat you badly (which they invariably do).
