* Birch trees need a good spot, with moist cool soil but where the sun can reach its leaves all day. North and East of a house is a good position in the US. * Birch trees will grow to 40 or 50 feet, so don't plant it under power lines. Give it plenty of room. * They have a very shallow root system, just under the surface, so keep them away from driveways. * It is susceptible to insects, especially the birch leafminer and the bronze birch borer. Get advice from your local nursery about this. * Your tree will need mulching. A 4" mulch of wood chips, shredded bark and compost should be spread around the tree, without touching the trunk. A mature tree should have mulch to a radius of at least 6 feet. Mulch will help the soil retain moisture and keep it cool. * If you don't get enough rain, then you must give your birch tree a long (2-3 hours) slow watering once a week. Leave the hose on the ground and let it run slowly is a good technique. * You shouldn't need fertilizer unless the soil is poor.
