There were actually two decades that changed America: the Sixties with the opposition to the Vietnam War, the Pill and the Woman's Liberation movement, and then the Seventies, the decade of the I-generation, the No-Fault divorce laws that brought about a slow deterioration of family life. You can sum up these changes with an overall statement that they have caused today's difficulty of maintaining workable family relationships. For human relationships are built on alikeness, that with a more diverse elements going into a relationship, has become more difficult to maintain. It still remains to be seen whether these changes of allowing more freedoms, will also have a positive effect on our society. You can read much more about this problem in the chapter "In The Wake of the Sixties" in Meyer's book on "Marriages, Shack-ups and Other Disasters."
