If a girl has started menstruating she can get pregnant. I have heard of girls as young as 8 starting menstruation. Technically in that case an 8 year old could have a baby. The girl must be at sexual maturity in order to become pregnant. I imagine if a girl is 11 and engaged in sexual contact and it just happens to be the first time she ovulates she could get pregnant without having her first period. Women have successfully had children well into their 40s and 50s. My mother is still capable of having a child and she will be 60. I have recently read some research stating that even younger girls are beginning puberty, and babies developing secondary sexual characteristics like breasts due to our modern hormone filled food supply.

Women tend to take after their mothers and grandmothers in when they start their periods and go through menopause.

If you are under 18 and thinking about sex, do yourself a favor and wait. There is too much on the line, and too much life to miss out on if you make a small mistake. The danger of STI's, and pregnancy are too great to chance when you are that young. In my opinion, if you cannot talk to an adult in your life about sex then you shouldn't be having it. I remember thinking I was grown up when I was about 16, but looking back now at 30 I realize I would have missed out on all the fun and freedom I have had in my 20's had I had an accident and gotten pregnant.

People young and old have been amazed at all the amazing things I have done in the last ten years, none of these would have been possible had I had a child or a serious disease. Think about what you want from life and make your own decision, and above all, unless you are ready to be a mom, always use a condom, ALWAYS!

However, the decision to become pregnant is not a simple question of physical fertility - you also need to consider whether or not you are mentally, emotionally and financially ready to care for a child. The ultimate goal of having a child is to mold another human being from being 100% dependent on you to be 100% independent. This takes a lot of time, tears and internal strength, not to mention the financial cost (which in the United States is currently running somewhere around $150,000 for 18 years of basic needs). If you are not ready to have a screaming, crying, unhappy child waking you up every two hours for food and a diaper change, you are not ready to have a baby regardless of your age.

Legally, there is no minimum age. Biologically, I recall girls as young as 10-11 having children. For the sake of the child as well as the rest of us who will have to deal with the consequences, the parents should be married, self-supporting, emotionally healthy, and old enough to recognize the responsibilities of parenthood.
